How to Apply For or Renew a Medical Cannabis Card

Medical cannabis in the District, legalized by the passage of the Legalization of Marijuana for Medical Treatment Amendment Act of 2010, allows DC residents, including minors, to be prescribed, purchase, possess, and use cannabis to treat a diagnosed qualifying medical condition or related side effect.

Whether you are getting your card for the first time or renewing your existing medical marijuana card, the process is the same. Once you complete all 3 steps below, it usually takes around 1 month to receive your card from the Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration.

You can use your personal physician if they have been approved by the Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration (ABRA) to recommend medical cannabis (marijuana). If not, you can book an appointment with a trusted doctor below.

A complete application consists of a patient application, headshot, photo ID, and 2 proofs of DC residency. If you would like the low income discount, you must also provide proof of low income status.

The application fee is $100 for regular income patients and $25 for qualified low income patients. The fee must be paid with a money order, cashiers check, or certified check. The ABRA does not accept credit/debit cards, cash, or personal checks.

Step 1: Booking a Doctor's Appointment

KINFOLK offers 4 medical cannabis-recommending doctors to choose from. All 4 options cost around 50% less than any other provider of medical cannabis recommendations in Washington, DC.

Step 2: Submitting Your Application

Applications can be submitted online or with a paper application. We highly recommend submitting your application online, as the Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration (ABRA) will process your application about 1 week faster.

Get your documents ready

  • The electronic recommendation number given after your doctor’s appointment in Step 1
  • A headshot (photo of yourself from the shoulders up) on a clear background, without glasses or anything coving your hair. Example headshot
  • A photo ID issued by the DC, federal, or other state government. If you have a valid DC drivers license with your current address, it can also be used as a proof of residency.
  • 2 proofs of DC residency. List of Accepted Documents on Application Note: Your 2 proofs cannot be of the same type (such as a power bill and a cable bill).
  • Proof of low income status (optional)

The copies of these documents submitted should be clear and easy to read. You can take a picture of them with your phone (ok), use a mobile app such as CamScanner(better), or use a scanner/copy machine (best).
